Trump: US could ‘easily open’ Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump said the United States could ‘easily open’ the Strait of Hormuz if given more time. The waterway remains closed amid the conflict with Iran. He suggested that restoring navigation could allow access to oil supplies and bring economic benefits.

The war, which began in late February with joint US-Israeli air strikes on Iran, has now lasted nearly five weeks, fuelling tensions in the region and in global financial markets. In response to the attacks, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a route through which around a fifth of the world’s oil consumption passes.

Reopening the strategic waterway has become a priority for several countries, as the conflict has pushed energy prices higher. Trump is under growing pressure to find a swift resolution.

He has also hinted at further attacks in earlier statements, including threats against Iranian infrastructure, which have drawn reactions from Tehran and added to market uncertainty.
