Meloni: Europe needs US but must assert its interests

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Europe should maintain its strategic partnership with the United States while openly pursuing its own interests.

In an interview with RAI television, she was reacting to tensions following US criticism of allies and an incident at the Sigonella air base, where Italy did not allow the landing of US bombers involved in an operation in Iran.

Meloni addressed the case indirectly but stressed that a break in transatlantic ties would not benefit Europe. At the same time, she said European countries must clearly state their position where disagreements arise. The US request was reportedly rejected because it conflicted with existing agreements and required parliamentary approval.

Spain has taken a similar stance, refusing to support US operations against Iran. In response, President Donald Trump has threatened to halt trade relations with Spain.
