Canada sends nearly $40m in aid to Ukraine

Canada has announced more than 51 million Canadian dollars in new humanitarian assistance for Ukraine, equivalent to about 39 million US dollars.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, most of the funding will address urgent needs caused by the war, including healthcare, housing, water and food. The money will be distributed through vetted partners to ensure effective use.

The package also includes longer-term support, with part of the funding earmarked for reforms, the functioning of public services and Ukraine’s preparations for EU accession. Assistance for veterans and their return to civilian life is another priority.

Canada is building on previous measures, including programmes that allow Ukrainians to live and work in the country.

Ottawa is combining humanitarian, economic and political support. It has also provided extensive military aid to Kyiv and tightened sanctions against Russia in recent months.
