War with Iran drives surge in US military spending
The White House has unveiled its 2027 budget proposal, which includes record defence spending of around $1.5 trillion – an all-time high and an increase of more than 40 per cent on the previous year.
According to CNN, the proposal reflects President Donald Trump’s priorities and responds to the ongoing war with Iran, which continues to dominate Washington’s strategic thinking.
Most of the funding is earmarked for replenishing munitions, strengthening the navy and developing the ‘Golden Dome’ anti-missile system. The plan also includes a five to seven per cent increase in troop pay to boost both recruitment and retention. At the same time, however, the budget includes significant cuts to civilian spending of around ten per cent, affecting social services and healthcare.
Although Trump has repeatedly spoken of a possible end to the conflict with Iran, the proposal suggests the opposite. Negotiations on a ceasefire have yet to produce a result and are reportedly stalled.
