Russia warns citizens against travelling to certain countries
Russia has warned its citizens against travelling to countries that have extradition treaties with the US. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, there is a risk that they could be detained and subsequently extradited to US authorities, which could lead to years of punishment.
At the same time, Moscow claims that Washington has stepped up its use of prosecutions outside its territory following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Russian diplomats also claim that U.S. agencies are luring Russian citizens abroad under the pretext of lucrative offers in order to arrest them afterward. However, no specific cases are cited.
The warning primarily concerns individuals suspected of violating U.S. laws or who are already on sanctions lists. Moscow points out that more than 100 Russians have been extradited in this manner since 2008, citing the case of businessman Viktor Bout as an example.
