Easter celebrations in Jerusalem marred by war
Easter celebrations in Jerusalem this year have been marked by the war in the Middle East. The Old City, which is usually full of worshippers and processions during the holidays, remained unusually quiet.
Israel imposed strict security measures and restricted access to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the most important Christian sites.
This is due to fears of attacks as debris from Iranian missiles has been hitting the area since the end of February. They have also hit the surrounding area of important religious sites, including the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Jewish Quarter.
Only a small number of worshippers were allowed to enter the basilica, while others watched the ceremonies remotely. Thus, the usual festive atmosphere with processions and singing gave way this year to tension and strict controls.
