Pakistan proposes US-Iran ceasefire as early as Monday

Iran and the United States have received a proposal to end hostilities that could come into force as early as Monday and lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the framework was prepared by Pakistan, which is acting as the main channel of communication between the parties.

The proposal envisages a two-step process, first an immediate ceasefire followed by a comprehensive agreement. The initial ceasefire would be confirmed through a memorandum of understanding, followed by negotiations on a permanent solution. The proposal includes a 45-day ceasefire, as reported by Axios on Sunday.

According to sources, Pakistan’s army chief has been in contact with both US and Iranian officials. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would take place immediately after the agreement, with the parties then having another 15 to 20 days to reach a broader settlement.

A final agreement could include a commitment by Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief. So far, however, Tehran has not responded to the proposal, diplomats said.
