Trump suggests China pushed Iran towards talks

US President Donald Trump has suggested that pressure from China played a role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table in its conflict with Israel and the United States.

In an interview with AFP, Trump said Beijing had been key in encouraging Tehran to engage in ceasefire talks with its adversaries.

Chinese officials, however, have struck a more cautious tone. While Beijing has welcomed the ceasefire and emphasised the need for stability in the Middle East, it has not outlined any specific actions it may have taken.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated China’s long-standing position in favour of a cessation of hostilities and the resolution of disputes through political means. However, her remarks did not clarify the extent of China’s direct involvement in the negotiations.
