Tensions Grow as Trump Pursues Greenland Ambitions

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has called on NATO allies to work together to protect international law and preserve the post-war geopolitical order. At the same time, he criticised statements by US President Donald Trump, who has questioned the role of the alliance and described Greenland as a “badly led piece of ice”.

“We are not some piece of ice. We are a proud nation of 57,000 people who work every day as good global citizens with full respect for all our allies,” he said.

Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with NATO over what he sees as its reluctance to become involved in the conflict with Iran and hinted at doubts about the alliance’s reliability. Nielsen said such attitudes are problematic and that allies should work together to maintain the stability and rules of the international system.

The tensions also extend to Trump’s efforts to wrest Greenland from Denmark, a NATO member. The US has also considered the use of military force, prompting some European countries to send troops to the island. The situation has since shifted to the diplomatic level, with negotiations underway between Greenland, Denmark and the US.

Nielsen confirmed that discussions were continuing but said he did not believe the US president had abandoned his ambitions for Greenland.
