Republicans Block Democrats’ Bid to End Iran War

Republicans in the US House of Representatives blocked an attempt by Democrats to limit President Donald Trump’s war powers in the Iran conflict. They adjourned the largely symbolic session before a resolution calling for a cessation of military operations could be put to a vote.

Democrats said they will try to force a vote again after the Easter recess.

Tensions have been heightened by Trump’s comments about the possible destruction of Iran, which Democrats say go beyond acceptable rhetoric and raise questions about impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. The White House, by contrast, maintains that the president is acting within his powers.

Criticism has focused not only on legislative issues but also on the economic consequences of the war. Democrats point to rising prices for energy and basic goods as a result of supply disruptions.

Republicans have been relatively united in their support for Trump’s policies, which for now has put the brakes on any legislative restrictions.
