China Moves Towards Closer Partnership with North Korea
China and North Korea should strengthen communication and coordination on key international and regional issues, China’s foreign minister said during a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday, according to an official Chinese statement.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi has been on a two-day visit to Pyongyang since Thursday aimed at reinforcing relations between the two countries after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted contacts and Kim deepened ties with Moscow.
A Chinese diplomat said Beijing was willing to increase exchanges and engagement to promote practical cooperation with North Korea.
Wang met his North Korean counterpart on Thursday and pledged to "further consolidate the positive development" of bilateral relations with Pyongyang.
The visit comes as US President Donald Trump is expected to travel to China next month. Trump has previously expressed interest in resuming talks with Kim.
