Pope Leo XIV Condemns War and Violence

The Holy Father, Leo XIV, delivered a forceful message against war and violence, declaring that Christianity is incompatible with bombing and killing. Addressing the bishops of Baghdad, he said the modern world is increasingly dominated by brutality driven by hatred and self-interest.

He described the Middle East as a symbolic place where spiritual heritage meets the harsh reality of war and economic ruthlessness. The Pope warned that human lives are often reduced to ‘collateral damage’ in the pursuit of power.

At the same time, he stressed that no objective can justify the suffering of the innocent. He also called on the Church to state clearly that God is not the author of conflict and that believers must never support violence, whether in the past or the present.
