US Blockade of Iran Carries Risks, Experts Say

The US administration plans to impose a naval blockade targeting ships going to or from Iran, a sweeping military measure with an unclear timeframe, experts say. US President Donald Trump announced the move after failed peace talks.

The aim is to pressure Tehran to end restrictions on transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the blockade would not apply to all vessels but only to those linked to Iran. The measure is due to take effect on Monday. Trump also indicated that US forces may stop ships that have paid Iran for passage.

Experts warn that a blockade would require a large-scale deployment of military forces and could prove unsustainable in the long term. They also caution that Iran could retaliate with attacks on ships or infrastructure in the region.

The situation is complicated by the Strait’s role as a key route for around 20% of the world’s oil supply. Tensions have already pushed energy prices higher, and US politicians have questioned whether the move would help reduce them. Iran has also warned that any military vessels in the area would be considered a violation of the ceasefire.
