UK Revives Government "War Book", Sky News Reports
The UK is preparing a revised version of a sweeping contingency plan in response to the war, Sky News reported. The plan would involve not only the military but also the civilian sector, including police, hospitals and industry.
Chief of the Defence Staff Adm Sir Richard Knighton said the initiative is a modernized version of the so-called government war book, drawing on Cold War experience but adapted to current conditions.
The plan envisages strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure such as power grids, water supplies and transport, both against natural disasters and potential military threats. Knighton said preparing for conflict includes a civilian component and requires a broader societal approach to security.
The initiative comes amid pressure to increase defense spending, which is expected to reach 3.5% of gross domestic product by 2035. At the same time, the government has not yet published a long-awaited investment plan for the armed forces, creating uncertainty in the defense industry.
Knighton said the delay may be linked to efforts to secure funding. He stressed the need for a well-prepared and workable plan rather than a quick but poorly designed solution.
He added that the public should be aware of the changing security environment and be prepared to support the state and the armed forces in a crisis.
