Vance Regrets Orban Defeat, Cites Loyalty During Campaign

According to Politico, US Vice President JD Vance said he regretted Viktor Orban’s defeat in Hungary’s elections but was not surprised. He described his participation in the campaign alongside him as a sign of loyalty to a long-time ally, not an attempt to influence the outcome.

Peter Magyar, whose Tisza party won a constitutional majority in parliament, secured victory. This will allow him to push through wide-ranging reforms, including constitutional changes, anti-corruption measures and strengthening the rule of law. Magyar also declared his intention to limit the prime minister to two terms and restore checks and balances.

He said the result reflected the country’s desire to consolidate its position in Europe after years of disputes with Brussels. He also hinted at the possibility of unblocking European funds.

Outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban faced criticism for conflicts with the EU and the freezing of funds, but his supporters stressed the defence of sovereignty. Magyar called for a swift handover of power and described Russia as a security risk.

The new leader wants to improve relations with Poland, strengthen cooperation in Brussels and ensure the independence of public media.
