Slovenia Plans Referendum on NATO Withdrawal
The newly elected speaker of the Slovenian parliament and leader of the Party of Truth, Zoran Stevanovic, has announced plans to hold a referendum on the country’s withdrawal from NATO.
According to BalkanWeb, he described the move as a pledge to voters that he intends to honour.
He argued that Slovenia should pursue a more sovereign and independent foreign policy. “We will resolutely refuse to interfere in the military and diplomatic conflicts of others, because Slovenia will never benefit from it,” he said.
Slovenia has been a member of NATO since March 2004, when it also joined the European Union.
