Meloni Suspends Defense Cooperation with Israel
The government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of its defence cooperation agreement with Israel, amid mounting tensions in the Middle East.
The move follows the recent escalation of conflict in the region, including Israeli strikes on Lebanon that have also affected Italian soldiers serving as part of a United Nations mission.
Italy has long been regarded as one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe. The decision was taken after a joint meeting involving the prime minister, the foreign and defence ministers and the deputy prime minister.
According to available information, one immediate consequence will be the suspension of joint military training activities. The step signals a more cautious approach in Rome as the regional security situation continues to evolve.
Israel has not yet issued an official response.
