ECB Waits on Rate Decision amid Uncertainty

The European Central Bank has yet to decide on the future course of interest rates, as the economic impact of the conflict in Iran on the eurozone remains uncertain. ECB President Christine Lagarde has said it is too early to make firm predictions, noting that even policymakers within the institution do not share a single view.

Investors are increasingly speculating about a possible rate increase, driven in part by rising energy prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The disruption has fuelled concerns about inflationary pressure across the eurozone, adding to uncertainty over the central bank’s next move.

The ECB is currently working with several scenarios, ranging from a baseline outlook to more adverse developments, with the economy positioned somewhere between the two, Lagarde said. She warned, however, that conditions remain fluid and could shift rapidly, making it impossible at this stage to confirm any specific trajectory for interest rates.

Lagarde also dismissed speculation about her departure, stressing that the ECB would continue to provide leadership during a period of heightened uncertainty.
