EU Draws Up Plan to Avert Aviation Fuel Shortage

The European Union is preparing a plan to address a looming shortage of aviation fuel and boost refinery capacity, responding to airline warnings of supply disruptions linked to the war with Iran.

European airlines warn that shortages could emerge within weeks, threatening the summer travel season. The region relies heavily on imports, with around 75% of aviation fuel coming from the Middle East.

Prices have risen sharply following restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Airlines have warned of higher fares, flight cancellations and grounded aircraft. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that shortages could begin as early as June.

The European Commission plans to map refinery capacity and introduce measures to maximize its use. Further steps to secure supply are also under consideration.

The situation is complicated by uneven stock distribution across Europe and limited capacity to offset import shortfalls. Some airports warn that shortages could arise within three weeks.

While European countries maintain emergency oil reserves, these are not specifically allocated to aviation fuel.
