Pope Leo XIV Criticizes War Spending During Cameroon Visit

During a visit to Cameroon, Pope Leo XIV criticized world leaders who, he said, devote vast resources to wars while neglecting reconstruction and aid.

Speaking in the town of Bamenda in the conflict-affected English-speaking region, he said the world is “being ravaged by a handful of tyrants” and called for a fundamental change of direction. He also condemned the use of religion to justify violence, saying it is morally unacceptable.

His remarks come amid growing tensions with US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the pope on social media. Leo has avoided direct responses, instead stressing the need to address ongoing conflicts, including the war in Iran.

The visit also highlighted the long-running conflict between the government and separatists, which has claimed thousands of lives.

The pope expressed hope that religious leaders can contribute to a peaceful solution and welcomed the fact that the conflict has not turned into a religious war.

Sarah Mullally, the first woman to lead the Church of England, also voiced strong support for the pope and his call for peace. She urged the faithful across the Anglican Communion to support efforts towards a more just and peaceful resolution.
