EU Seeks to Renew Ties With Syria

The European Union is preparing to intensify contacts with Syria and open the door to closer economic and security cooperation, according to a document seen by Reuters.

The document outlines plans to revive a 1978 cooperation agreement and launch a formal political dialogue with Syria’s transitional authorities on 11 May. At the same time, the EU intends to “adjust and adapt” its sanctions regime in order to maintain influence while supporting the country’s political transition.

Following the easing of most Western sanctions, Syria has been seeking broader reintegration into the international community under its interim leadership.

The proposals also include strengthening economic ties, with a focus on promoting investment and improving the business environment. The EU aims to cooperate on the return of refugees in what it describes as a “safe, voluntary and dignified” manner.

Brussels is also considering greater involvement of Syria in regional projects in transport, energy and digital networks. The country is increasingly seen as a potential transit hub, particularly in the context of the ongoing energy crisis.

In the security sphere, the EU is exploring support for police training, as well as cooperation in combating terrorism and organised crime. The document also refers to backing the integration of Kurdish structures into the Syrian state.
