Poll: More than Half of Britons Support Return to the EU

Ten years after the Brexit referendum, more than half of voters support the UK's return to the European Union. That's according to a poll mapping public attitudes towards relations with the EU.

53 per cent of respondents support rejoining the Union, with support among Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green voters reaching more than 80 per cent. The government's current approach is supported by 61 per cent of respondents, but only 19 per cent support it "strongly".

Experts say Labour's "cautious" approach could lead to a loss of support among progressive voters even in traditional regions. "We think there is an inherent risk with half-measures", said Tom Brufatto of Best for Britain.

The poll explored a number of scenarios, including a return to the single market or a customs union, which Labour rejects. Such a move would require a "deep debate on sovereignty", according to Brufatto.

Expert John Curtice criticised Labour's "strategy of silence" and warned that the party was losing more voters to the Liberal Democrats and Greens than to pro-Brexit parties.

Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock said Brexit had caused "enormous damage" and believed the country would one day return to membership.
