Peter Magyar’s Tisza Wins 141 Seats After Final Count
Peter Magyar’s Tisza party has secured 141 of 199 seats after the final count in Hungary’s elections, strengthening its constitutional majority and confirming a decisive victory in a record turnout that ends Viktor Orban’s 16-year rule.
Magyar described the result as an unprecedented mandate and stressed the responsibility it entails. His party now holds enough seats to amend the constitution. Fidesz has been significantly weakened and will hold 52 seats.
The outcome has boosted Hungarian assets, with investors expecting improved relations with the European Union (EU) and the possible release of billions of euros withheld over concerns about democratic standards.
Magyar is expected to take office on 9 or 10 May and plans to launch a major anti-corruption drive and revive the economy.
Analysts caution that the impact of EU funds will be felt mainly in the medium term, while short-term developments will also depend on external factors.
