Iran Retains Leverage Over Strait of Hormuz

Iran has demonstrated that control of the Strait of Hormuz remains its key deterrent against adversaries, according to a New York Times analysis. Despite damage to its military capabilities during the conflict with the United States and Israel, Tehran retains the ability to influence shipping through the strategic waterway, which carries about 20% of global oil supplies.

Temporary restrictions on shipping in the strait have had global economic consequences, including rising energy prices and disrupted supply chains. They have also forced the United States and Israel to reassess military options in the region.

Iran is using a mix of drones, missiles and the threat of naval mines. It is believed to have retained a significant portion of its arsenal, allowing it to continue threatening shipping.

Analysts warn that closing the strait could be among Tehran’s first steps in the event of further conflict. The dispute over control of the waterway also complicates the ceasefire and remains a key source of tension between Iran and the United States.
