Macron to Visit Greece to Renew Defense Agreement
French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Greece next week to renew a security agreement between the two countries, a Greek government official said on Sunday, against the backdrop of the war with Iran.
France and Greece, long-time NATO allies, signed a security and defense agreement in 2021 committing them to provide mutual assistance in the event of an attack. The deal also included Athens’ purchase of three French-built frigates and about 24 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault.
Macron’s visit on 24–25 April will extend the agreement by another five years, with an automatic renewal after that period, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The talks will also cover maritime security and the Strait of Hormuz, the official added.
