Kyiv Shooting Leaves Six Dead, Eight Still Hospitalized

Eight people remain hospitalized, including a child, after a shooting in Kyiv in which six people were killed. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the child was in a moderate condition, while one adult was critically injured.

The Russian-born attacker opened fire on passers-by on Saturday before barricading himself inside a supermarket with hostages. After unsuccessful negotiations, police stormed the building and shot him dead.

The incident took place in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. The supermarket remains closed. President Volodymyr Zelensky said a total of 14 people were injured.

Security forces are treating the case as a terrorist act, though the motive remains unclear. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said authorities were also examining how the attacker obtained a gun permit.

The shooting has sparked debate over self-defense laws and the regulation of civilian weapons. Ukrainians are currently allowed to own only hunting firearms.
