Czech Republic Weighs Joining Macron’s Nuclear Plan

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis expressed support for the country’s participation in a Europe-wide nuclear deterrence initiative proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, according to CT24. He did not specify the form of involvement.

“We in Europe must have allies and France is ideal for this”, he wrote on the social media platform X.

Macron’s initiative responds to a changing security environment and aims to strengthen European defense, including nuclear strategy. France is also considering extending its nuclear deterrent within a broader European framework while maintaining sovereignty. Some countries are already negotiating or have reached agreements on participation, including Denmark.

Reactions among Czech politicians are mixed. Foreign Minister Petr Macinka said the Czech Republic does not possess nuclear weapons and questioned the scope for involvement. Other officials pointed to the importance of the US nuclear umbrella within NATO. President Petr Pavel and former foreign minister Jan Lipavsky recommended opening consultations with France.

Macron has also called on European states to increase their contribution to common defense and identified areas where additional capacity is needed.
