Church vs State: US Supreme Court to Rule on LGBT School Dispute
The US Supreme Court will take up a dispute between Catholic schools and the state of Colorado over the conditions attached to preschool funding.
The Archdiocese of Denver, along with other plaintiffs, is seeking an exemption from a rule requiring schools that receive public funds to provide equal access to all children, regardless of the sexual orientation or gender identity of their family members.
The plaintiffs argue that such a requirement infringes on religious liberty and forces parents to choose schools that reflect the state’s values rather than their own.
Lower courts have so far ruled in Colorado’s favor, finding that the rules are neutral and apply equally to all program participants.
