Weber: EU May End Proceedings Against Hungary
Following Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s election defeat, Hungary could see a swift conclusion to the European Union’s legal proceedings, according to DPA, citing European People’s Party (EPP) leader Manfred Weber.
Speaking on Wednesday, Weber said he supported initial steps to halt the Article 7 procedure. The process, launched in 2018 over concerns about fundamental values and the rule of law, could have led to Hungary losing its voting rights.
The EPP leader said the procedure was directly linked to Orban’s policies, while incoming Prime Minister Peter Magyar, a member of the EPP, has committed to a pro-European course and reforms. Weber argued that the European Parliament should recognize this shift and begin the process of ending the sanction mechanism.
