Proposal to Replace Iran With Italy at World Cup Draws Criticism
A proposal by a US diplomat for Italy to replace Iran at the World Cup has drawn sharp criticism in Rome. US special envoy Paolo Zampolli said he had raised the idea with President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Iran’s participation in the tournament is uncertain after the February attacks by the US and Israel. Trump has sent mixed signals, describing Iran as “welcome” while also expressing security concerns.
Italy, a four-time world champion, failed to qualify for the tournament and has missed out since 2014. Zampolli said he had “enough credit” to secure participation.
Italian officials rejected the idea. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said participation had to be earned on the pitch, not “through the back door”. Italian Olympic Committee President Luciano Buonfiglio made a similar point, calling such a move insulting. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti described the proposal as “shameful”.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from 11 June to 19 July in the US, Canada and Mexico.
