Italian Peacekeepers Replace Christ Statue Destroyed by Israel
Italian soldiers serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have replaced a statue of Jesus Christ in the Lebanese village of Debel after it was reportedly destroyed by Israeli troops.
The incident drew widespread condemnation. The two Israeli soldiers involved have been withdrawn from combat duty and face 30 days of disciplinary detention.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised the Italian UNIFIL contingent for donating a replacement statue, describing the gesture as one that went beyond the incident itself and carried a message of dialogue and reconciliation.
