DeepSeek Unveils New AI Model Amid US Theft Accusations

Chinese startup DeepSeek has released the first preview of its new artificial intelligence model, V4, positioning it as a competitor to the world's leading AI systems. The company says the Pro version outperforms other open-source models in general knowledge tests, falling short only of Google's closed Gemini Pro model.

A cheaper flash version has also been made available, with the preview intended to gather feedback ahead of the final release.

DeepSeek, which operates under the High-Flyer hedge fund, is seeking new investment at a valuation above $20bn. Tech giants Alibaba and Tencent are reportedly among the interested parties.

The project has not been without controversy. The US administration has repeatedly accused China of stealing intellectual property in the field of AI, claims Beijing rejects.
