Strongest El Niño in a Decade Threatens Asian Crops

Forecasters warn that the second half of 2026 could bring the strongest El Niño event in a decade, with hot and dry conditions expected across Asia.

Meteorologists say there is a high probability of the phenomenon emerging during the summer, with its effects potentially lasting until the end of the year. India, Australia and South-East Asia are considered most at risk, with all three already experiencing below-average rainfall.

A prolonged drought could significantly reduce yields of rice, wheat, palm oil and soybeans. The situation is further complicated by fertiliser shortages and high fuel prices stemming from the conflict with Iran, which has disrupted key trade routes.

The combination of adverse weather and rising input costs is placing growing pressure on farmers and global food supplies. While El Niño may bring above-average rainfall to the Americas and Europe, meteorologists warn that risks there are not negligible either.
