Trump and King Charles to Meet Amid Strains Over Iran and NATO
US President Donald Trump is set to meet King Charles III during the monarch’s four-day state visit to the United States from 27 to 30 April, marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. The King is expected to visit Washington, New York and Virginia and address the US Congress during the trip.
Trump said he plans to raise several sensitive issues during the visit, including Iran, NATO and the UK’s digital services tax. A private meeting with the King and a state dinner at the White House are also planned.
The visit comes against the backdrop of strained relations between the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to several assessments, ties are at their lowest point since the Suez Crisis in 1956. Trump has repeatedly criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer, particularly over his refusal to support military action against Iran, and has also questioned Britain’s military capabilities.
Tensions have been further heightened by the threat of US tariffs unless London abolishes its digital services tax.
