Islamist Attacks Shake Mali as Fighting Reaches Bamako

Mali is facing coordinated militant attacks that have struck both the capital, Bamako, and several other regions of the country.

Explosions and heavy gunfire were reported early in the morning, particularly around the key military base in Kati, while unrest was also reported in Sevare, Kidal and Gao. The army confirmed attacks by what it described as “terrorist groups” on several positions and said fighting was still under way.

No group has officially claimed responsibility, but security sources have pointed to a regional branch of al-Qaeda. A Tuareg alliance has also claimed involvement, saying it had taken control of parts of northern Mali.

Mali has long struggled with both Islamist insurgents and separatist movements. Despite repeated promises by the military junta that seized power after successive coups, the security situation remains fragile.
