Erdogan: Kurdish Peace Process on Track Despite Disputes

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the peace process with Kurdish militants is progressing well despite criticism from pro-Kurdish politicians.

Speaking in parliament, he said recent steps had moved negotiations to a more sensitive phase following the approval of a parliamentary commission report, which includes proposals for legal reforms and envisages the dissolution of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

His remarks came shortly after sharp criticism from the pro-Kurdish DEM party, which accused the government of hesitating and moving too slowly despite what it described as a historic opportunity for peace.

Erdogan rejected the criticism, saying those who draw pessimistic conclusions about the process are "acting on illusions, not facts". He warned that the process was at a sensitive stage that needed to be managed carefully. The ruling People's Alliance is seeking support from other political parties.

The PKK halted attacks last year and in May announced its intention to disband and end its armed struggle. Disputes persist over the next steps, however, with Ankara insisting on verifying disarmament while Kurdish politicians demand faster reforms.
