US Plans International Coalition to Secure Strait of Hormuz

The administration of US President Donald Trump is working to build an international coalition to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a US State Department document obtained by Reuters, the initiative, known as the Freedom of the Seas Construct, has been approved by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It is designed as a joint effort between diplomatic channels and the Pentagon.

The diplomatic component is intended to link partner countries with the shipping industry, while the military component, led by US Central Command, will coordinate ship movements and maintain real-time communication.

Washington plans to engage allies through its embassies. Participation could take various forms, including diplomatic support, information sharing and a naval presence.

The initiative aims to ensure energy security, protect infrastructure and safeguard navigation rights along key maritime routes.

The plan follows restrictions on traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas supplies. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz declined sharply after US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered a broader disruption of maritime traffic.
