Trump-Putin Phone Calls Raise Questions in Brussels

Talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are raising more questions than answers, the European Union said on Thursday. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, made the remarks in Estonia, where she told reporters that direct contacts between the two leaders were fuelling doubts, particularly given current developments on the international scene.

Trump announced on Wednesday that he had discussed the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine with Putin, though details of the conversation remain unclear.

"When we see these calls between President Trump and President Putin, then always, you know, there are a lot of questions unanswered", Kallas said.

She also pointed to a broader contradiction in Moscow's positions. "Russia is openly praising the 'heroic battle' that Iran is having against America", she added, suggesting this complicated diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

The EU, Kallas said, remains wary of the outcome of such negotiations.
