Three Leaders Say They Nominated Trump for Nobel Peace Prize
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received 287 nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, comprising 208 individuals and 79 organizations, secretary Kristian Berg Harpviken announced on Thursday.
Harpviken noted that the list shows significant variation from last year. "One of the things that has to some extent surprised me is how much renewal there is from year to year on the list", he said. Despite a growing number of conflicts worldwide and mounting pressure on international cooperation, he said the importance of the award had not diminished. "The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we're living in", he added.
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated US President Donald Trump, though the claims cannot be verified. Nominations remain secret for 50 years and the committee does not confirm or deny them. Those eligible to nominate candidates include government and parliament members, heads of state, university professors and former laureates.
The committee also expressed concern about the health of 2023 laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is imprisoned in Iran. According to supporters, her condition is deteriorating following a heart attack and her life is in danger.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced on 9 October and the award ceremony will take place on 10 December.
