Mayon Volcano Erupts in Philippines, Ash Covers Dozens of Villages
The Mayon volcano in the Philippines has erupted, covering surrounding areas with a thick layer of ash and affecting 52 villages since Saturday, the PNA news agency reported, citing authorities. Lava flows have begun descending the slopes, according to DPA.
Firefighters and rescue teams have been deployed to assist residents. “Our teams are already on the ground providing support to the affected communities, coordinating with the relevant government agencies and local civil protection organisations,” fire department spokesperson Achilles Santiago said.
The Mayon volcano, which rises 2,462 m, is located about 330 km southeast of Manila in the Bicol region on the island of Luzon. It is one of the country’s most active volcanoes and has shown increased activity since the beginning of the year.
Since the eruption began on Saturday, authorities have recorded 45 earthquakes and 32 tremors.
