Fico Meets Zelensky Before Planned Moscow Visit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday. According to Zelensky, the talks focused in particular on Ukraine's ambitions to join the European Union.
"We discussed cooperation across various areas and holding a government meeting in the format of an intergovernmental commission in the near future", Zelensky said on X.
Fico is due to visit Moscow later this week to mark Russia's Victory Day celebrations on 9 May. Russian state television had earlier reported that the Slovak prime minister would be among the few foreign leaders to attend the military parade.
Fico said on Monday, however, that he would not take part in the parade. He is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and lay flowers at a memorial to mark Slovakia's liberation by the Red Army in 1945.
