Tesla Recalls 219,000 Vehicles Over Camera Fault

Tesla is recalling nearly 219,000 vehicles in the United States because of a problem with the rear-view camera image. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned that a delayed image could increase the risk of a crash.

According to the regulator, the camera image in affected vehicles may not appear immediately after the driver shifts into reverse, limiting visibility while backing up.

The recall affects certain Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles. The company is addressing the issue through an over-the-air software update, with no service visit required.

Tesla has faced increased scrutiny from US authorities over vehicle safety features. Last month, the regulator closed an investigation into about 2.6 million Tesla vehicles over a feature that allows cars to move remotely.

The agency ultimately concluded that the system was linked only to low-speed incidents. The latest problem with the reversing camera, however, raises further questions about the reliability of the software systems on which Tesla relies for much of its vehicles’ operation.
