Kremlin Tightens Putin's Security Ahead of Victory Day
The Kremlin has announced tightened security measures for President Vladimir Putin ahead of Victory Day celebrations on 9 May, citing fears of possible Ukrainian attacks during the military parade in Red Square.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the president's security had been strengthened because of alleged "terrorist threats" from Ukraine. The Kremlin also dismissed Western media reports of a possible coup or assassination attempt against Putin.
Russia is on high alert following recent drone attacks on Moscow. Air defenses have destroyed dozens of drones heading towards the capital, according to authorities.
Moscow has warned that it will respond to any attack during the celebrations with a massive missile strike on Kyiv. The situation is further complicated by a dispute over a ceasefire, with Russia and Ukraine having put forward competing proposals to halt the fighting.
