Judge Allows Cameras in Kirk Murder Case

A Utah judge has rejected a request by Tyler Robinson, the man charged with murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to ban live television coverage and photography from court hearings.

Judge Tony Graf ruled that broadcasts provide public scrutiny of the judiciary, adding that the court had taken steps to ensure footage does not influence potential jurors, including not showing Robinson in handcuffs. The defense had argued that media coverage of the case was sensationalist and one-sided.

Kirk's widow, Erika, joined the media and the prosecution in supporting the continuation of camera access, arguing that transparency is the best way to counter misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Graf also granted a defense request to postpone the preliminary hearing to 6-10 July. At that hearing, prosecutors must present sufficient evidence to move the case toward trial. Defense attorneys had sought additional time to review data linking Robinson's DNA to the rifle used in the attack.

The next hearing is scheduled for 19 May. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Robinson. Kirk was shot on 10 September 2025 during a debate at Utah Valley University.
