Merz Warns of NATO Split and Criticizes Fico over Moscow Visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says Europe remains committed to keeping NATO functioning despite rising tensions with the United States. Differences between Washington and its European allies have deepened, particularly over the war with Iran, which several European countries, including Germany, have declined to support.

Speaking at a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Merz stressed that Europe and the United States share a common goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Tensions have been heightened by President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany and cancel the planned deployment of Tomahawk missiles, moves that followed Merz's criticism of US negotiations with Tehran.

Merz also warned of the growing threat from Russia and expressed support for strengthening European defenses. He was additionally critical of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's visit to Moscow to attend Victory Day celebrations.
