Starmer Vows to Fight On After Labour Election Defeat

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to fight on, describing his government as a “10-year project” despite calls for him to resign after Labour’s defeat in local elections earlier this week.

Starmer’s Labour Party suffered Britain’s worst local election defeat for a ruling party in more than three decades, prompting a growing number of lawmakers to call for him to be removed.

A former minister in Starmer’s cabinet said that if the cabinet did not take steps to recall him by Monday, he would seek support from other lawmakers to launch a leadership contest.

Asked by the Observer in an interview published on Sunday whether he would lead Labour into the next general election, Starmer said he would.

He added that he would not give up the job to which he was elected in July 2024 and plunge the country into chaos.

If Starmer’s cabinet is eventually recalled in the coming weeks, Britain will have its seventh prime minister in a decade.
