Warsaw Seeks Extradition of Ex-Minister Ziobro from US

Poland will seek the extradition of former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro from the United States after he confirmed he had left Hungary and is currently in the US, according to the PAP news agency. Warsaw said Ziobro faces 26 charges, including leading an organized criminal group and abuse of power.

The Foreign Ministry said it would support action by the justice authorities. Interior Minister Waldemar Zurek said he would request Ziobro’s extradition as early as Monday and was reviewing how the politician was able to leave Hungary and enter the US despite having his passport revoked in Poland.

Zurek added that Washington had not indicated any intention to assist Ziobro in evading justice.

Ziobro said in a television interview on Sunday that he was traveling using documents issued to individuals granted asylum. According to Poland’s Justice Ministry, he may have obtained a so-called Geneva passport issued by Hungarian authorities after receiving international protection in Hungary last year.
