Greece Claims Lefkada Drone Came From Ukraine
Greek authorities are investigating the origin of a military naval drone carrying explosives, discovered by fishermen off the island of Lefkada last week. According to preliminary findings, the drone may have failed due to a technical malfunction and may not have travelled far.
Athens claims the drone originated in Ukraine, which Kyiv officially denies. The incident has sparked diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Greek intelligence and the military are analysing the device, including its metadata, to determine its mission and launch site. Investigators initially did not rule out the possibility that it was launched from Libya via the Mediterranean Sea, but current findings point away from that theory.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias warned that the drone posed a serious risk to shipping, saying a tragedy could have occurred had it collided with a civilian vessel. Greece has already informed the European Union about the incident.
