Trump Halts Deployment of US Troops to Poland
The United States has officially cancelled the planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, raising fresh questions about the future of the US military presence in Europe under President Donald Trump. The decision came just two weeks after the announcement of the withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany.
Acting US Army Chief of Staff Christopher LaNeve confirmed that the cancellation "made the most sense" but gave no specific reasons. Criticism has come mainly from Democrats, who say the move sends a negative signal to both NATO allies and US adversaries.
According to US sources, the cancellation may be part of a broader reorganization of US forces in Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that Warsaw had received guarantees from Washington that Polish security would not be undermined.
NATO also noted that rotational forces do not play a decisive role in the alliance's defense plans. Trump has long been pressing European countries to invest more in their own defense.
