Merz Casts Doubt on American Dream, Angering Trump Allies

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said he would not recommend his children study or work in the United States today. Speaking at a conference of young Catholics in Würzburg, he said he no longer sees the US as a country of opportunity for young people.

In his view, the social atmosphere in America has changed considerably and the country is deeply polarized. "I am a great admirer of America. At the moment my admiration is not growing", Merz said, adding that even highly educated people are finding it increasingly difficult to find work in the US. Germany, by contrast, still offers great opportunities for young people, he said.

The remarks immediately drew sharp reactions from allies of Donald Trump. Former US ambassador to Berlin Richard Grenell accused Merz of being subject to the "woke media" and recalled his accommodating tone during visits to the White House. Alternative for Germany (AfD) leader Alice Weidel also struck a critical note, saying the chancellor was leading Germany towards economic and social ruin.
